Copa built Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City as a pure transfer operation. Most passengers are connecting, not originating. That means the airport is designed for efficient throughput, not local traffic.

Minimum connection time is 1 hour 30 minutes for international-to-international. Copa schedules connections at 2-3 hours in practice -- enough buffer for immigration and security without killing half your day.

Copa flies to more US cities than most people realize:

New York (JFK), Miami (MIA), Orlando (MCO), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Tampa (TPA), Washington Dulles (IAD), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), Houston (IAH), Dallas (DFW), Denver (DEN), Las Vegas (LAS), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Boston (BOS).

That's 14 gateways, many with no nonstop Brazil service. If you're connecting from Denver, Las Vegas, Tampa, or San Francisco, Copa is likely your shortest total travel time to Sao Paulo.

From PTY, Copa flies to:

Fleet

Copa runs Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft on most US and Brazil routes. The MAX 9 seats 166 in two classes: 16 business (Dreams class), 150 economy. Business class is a recliner -- not lie-flat. It's adequate for the 3-5 hour segments between PTY and US cities, but on an overnight PTY-GRU leg, you're not sleeping well.

Connection Experience at PTY

Tocumen has improved dramatically with Terminal 2. The Copa Club (business lounge) in Terminal 2 has hot food, a bar, showers, and comfortable seating. Priority Pass holders can access the Copa Club and several third-party lounges.

Immigration is fast for transit passengers. Panama has a well-organized transit corridor -- if your connection is under 8 hours, you typically don't need to clear Panamanian immigration at all when connecting between two international flights.

The airport's weak spot is gate-area food and retail. It's limited compared to MIA or GRU. Use the lounge if you have access.

Avianca: The Bogota Connection

The Hub

Avianca's hub at El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogota is one of the busiest in South America. Unlike PTY (primarily a transfer hub), BOG serves both a large originating market and connecting traffic. The result: a busier, more congested airport with longer connection times.

Minimum connection is 2 hours for international-to-international. Avianca schedules connections at 2.5-4 hours. During peak periods, immigration and security lines can be slow. And the airport sits at 8,361 feet / 2,548 meters elevation, which some travelers notice on long layovers.

Avianca serves Miami (MIA), New York (JFK), Orlando (MCO), Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Houston (IAH), Washington Dulles (IAD), Los Angeles (LAX), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), and Boston (BOS).

Nine gateways. If you're flying from Denver, Las Vegas, Tampa, San Francisco, or Dallas, Avianca can't get you to BOG nonstop.

From BOG, Avianca flies to:

Your departure city is Copa-exclusive. Denver, Las Vegas, Tampa, San Francisco, Dallas -- Copa has direct flights from these to PTY. Avianca doesn't. A Copa itinerary with one stop at PTY beats an Avianca itinerary that requires a domestic US connection before reaching BOG.

You're going beyond GRU. Copa has more Brazilian destinations from PTY (including Manaus and Porto Alegre) than Avianca has from BOG. Heading to the Brazilian Amazon? Copa's MAO service is a direct option.
