The Busiest US-Brazil Route
Miami to Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) moves more passengers between the US and Brazil than any other city pair. Business travelers, the Brazilian diaspora in South Florida, leisure traffic in both directions -- it all funnels through MIA-GRU. Multiple airlines run daily nonstops, and several more serve the route with one-stop connections through Central and South American hubs.
Quick note: GRU (Guarulhos) is the correct airport for international flights. Sao Paulo's other airport, Congonhas (CGH), handles domestic traffic only. No US route touches CGH.
Nonstop Options
LATAM Airlines
LATAM runs nonstop MIA-GRU service, typically daily. This is one of their flagship long-haul routes and usually gets premium equipment.
- Aircraft: Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner or Boeing 777-300ER depending on season and demand
- Flight time: 8 hours 15 minutes southbound (MIA-GRU), 8:45 to 9:15 northbound (GRU-MIA)
- Cabin configuration (787-9): 30 business class seats (reverse herringbone, fully flat), 35 premium economy, 228 economy
- Cabin configuration (777-300ER): 38 business, 56 premium economy, 245 economy
- Schedule: Typically departs MIA in the evening, arrives GRU early morning. Return departs GRU late evening, arrives MIA early morning.
LATAM's business class on the 787-9 is genuinely competitive on this route -- fully flat seats, direct aisle access from every seat, solid catering with Brazilian-influenced menus. Premium economy offers 38-inch pitch with a wider seat and a dedicated cabin.
Seasonal notes: LATAM sometimes adds frequency or upgauges to the 777-300ER during peak periods: December-January (Brazilian summer holidays), late February (Carnival), and June-July (school winter break). Off-peak months (March-May, August-November) may see reduced frequencies or smaller aircraft.
American Airlines
American runs nonstop MIA-GRU daily, often with multiple frequencies. Miami is AA's largest hub and Latin America is their core franchise.
- Aircraft: Boeing 777-200ER (primary), occasionally Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner
- Flight time: Around 8 hours 15 minutes southbound, 9 hours northbound
- Cabin configuration (777-200ER): 37 Flagship Business seats (fully flat, Flagship Suite on refurbished aircraft), 24 premium economy, 209 main cabin
- Schedule: AA typically operates morning and evening departures from MIA to GRU. Exact times shift seasonally.
AA's refurbished 777-200ERs with Flagship Suite are a big upgrade over the older business seats. If you're booking business class, try to confirm which sub-fleet is operating your specific date. It matters.
Where AA really wins is connectivity. As the dominant carrier at MIA, American offers one-stop connections from basically every US city through its Miami hub. Coming from Nashville, Raleigh, or Denver? You can book MIA-GRU as part of a single AA itinerary with checked bags transferring automatically.
Azul (Seasonal / Limited)
Azul operates US-Brazil flights primarily from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Orlando (MCO) to Campinas-Viracopos (VCP), not GRU. They've periodically operated or announced MIA-VCP service. But VCP is about 100 km northwest of central Sao Paulo -- not a direct substitute for GRU if you're heading to the city center.
If Azul serves your dates, know that:
- VCP needs a 1.5-2 hour ground transfer to central Sao Paulo (vs. 45-60 minutes from GRU)
- Azul's A330neo business class is competitive with LATAM and AA
- Azul connects to more domestic Brazilian cities from VCP than most carriers offer from GRU
For this guide, LATAM and American are the primary nonstop MIA-GRU options.
One-Stop Alternatives
Connections add 3-6 hours but can save real money -- in both cash fares and award pricing.
Copa Airlines via Panama City (PTY)
Copa's hub at Tocumen International Airport is the most efficient connection point between MIA and GRU outside of nonstop service.
- Routing: MIA - PTY (3h30m) - GRU (6h30m)
- Total travel time: ~12-14 hours including connection
- Aircraft: Boeing 737 MAX 9 on both legs
- Connection at PTY: Copa's hub operation is tight. Minimum connection is 1h30m; most itineraries build in 2-3 hours.
- Alliance: Star Alliance
Copa frequently prices this routing $100-200 below LATAM or AA nonstop fares in economy. In business class the gap gets wider -- Copa runs $1,800-2,800 for MIA-GRU vs. $3,000-5,000 on LATAM/AA nonstop.
The catch: Copa's 737 business class is a recliner seat, not lie-flat. On an overnight PTY-GRU segment, that's a real downside.
Avianca via Bogota (BOG)
Avianca connects MIA-GRU through El Dorado International Airport in Bogota.
- Routing: MIA - BOG (3h30m) - GRU (6h)
- Total travel time: ~13-16 hours including connection
- Aircraft: Airbus A320 or Boeing 787 on MIA-BOG (depends on time of day), Boeing 787-8 on BOG-GRU
- Connection at BOG: Minimum 2 hours. El Dorado's international transit is straightforward -- no Colombian immigration needed for transit passengers.
- Alliance: Star Alliance
Avianca's edge is the 787 on BOG-GRU, which means a competitive lie-flat business class for the overnight portion. Economy pricing is similar to Copa, sometimes slightly higher.
Aerolineas Argentinas via Buenos Aires (EZE)
The least efficient connection, but worth knowing if you're combining Brazil and Argentina.
- Routing: MIA - EZE (9h30m) - GRU (2h45m)
- Total travel time: ~16-20 hours including connection
- Aircraft: Airbus A330-200 on MIA-EZE, Boeing 737-800 on EZE-GRU
Only makes sense if Buenos Aires is part of your trip. As a pure connection to Sao Paulo, it's way too long.
Route Comparison
| Option | Airlines | Total Time | Stops | Economy Fare Range | Business Fare Range | Equipment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MIA-GRU nonstop | LATAM | ~8h 15m | 0 | $500-900 | $2,800-5,000 | 787-9 / 777-300ER |
| MIA-GRU nonstop | American | ~8h 15m | 0 | $500-950 | $3,000-5,500 | 777-200ER / 787-8 |
| MIA-PTY-GRU | Copa | ~12-14h | 1 | $380-700 | $1,800-2,800 | 737 MAX |
| MIA-BOG-GRU | Avianca | ~13-16h | 1 | $400-750 | $2,000-3,200 | A320 + 787 |
| MIA-EZE-GRU | Aerolineas | ~16-20h | 1 | $450-800 | $2,200-3,500 | A330 + 737 |
Fare ranges are typical round-trip pricing across seasons. Peak (December-January, Carnival, June-July) pushes toward the high end or beyond. Shoulder season (March-May, August-November) offers the best pricing.
Award Booking: Which Programs to Search
This is where MIA-GRU gets interesting if you collect points. Every airline on this route is bookable through at least one loyalty program accessible from US credit card currencies.
For American Airlines Flights (Nonstop)
| Program | Award Rate (Economy OW) | Award Rate (Business OW) | How to Search |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAdvantage | 30,000 miles | 57,500 miles | aa.com |
| British Airways Avios | 34,000 Avios | 68,000 Avios | ba.com (use "Book with Avios" - partner flights) |
| Qantas Frequent Flyer | 36,000 points | 72,000 points | qantas.com (use "Classic Flight Rewards") |
| Etihad Guest | 29,750 miles | 57,750 miles | etihad.com (partner awards) |
AAdvantage offers the best standard pricing for AA MIA-GRU. BA Avios runs slightly higher because MIA-GRU falls in the 4,001-5,500 mile distance band (4,330 miles), which isn't an Avios sweet spot. Avios works better for shorter AA routes. Etihad Guest can sometimes find availability when AAdvantage shows none, and at marginally lower rates.
For LATAM Flights (Nonstop)
LATAM left oneworld in 2020 and now partners primarily with Delta through a joint venture.
| Program | Award Rate (Economy OW) | Award Rate (Business OW) | How to Search |
|---|---|---|---|
| LATAM Pass | 25,000-40,000 miles | 60,000-90,000 miles | latamairlines.com (dynamic pricing) |
| Delta SkyMiles | 35,000-55,000 miles | 80,000-150,000 miles | delta.com (SkyMiles award search) |
LATAM Pass uses dynamic pricing, so rates fluctuate with demand. The low end (25,000 economy) appears on off-peak dates booked in advance. Delta SkyMiles prices LATAM flights at Delta's own rates -- typically higher -- but availability is sometimes better through Delta's search than LATAM's.
For Copa Flights (via PTY)
| Program | Award Rate (Economy OW) | Award Rate (Business OW) | How to Search |
|---|---|---|---|
| United MileagePlus | 30,000 miles | 60,000 miles | united.com |
| Avianca LifeMiles | 25,000-30,000 miles | 50,000-60,000 miles | lifemiles.com |
Copa is Star Alliance. United MileagePlus and Avianca LifeMiles both search Copa availability. LifeMiles usually shows better award pricing and more availability than United for the same flights. I'd check LifeMiles first.
For Avianca Flights (via BOG)
| Program | Award Rate (Economy OW) | Award Rate (Business OW) | How to Search |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avianca LifeMiles | 25,000-30,000 miles | 50,000-63,000 miles | lifemiles.com |
| United MileagePlus | 30,000 miles | 60,000 miles | united.com |
Same Star Alliance availability pool as Copa. Search both United and LifeMiles; LifeMiles pricing is typically better.

The Best Paths, Simplified
For AA nonstop: Earn AAdvantage miles through co-branded cards. Chase UR to BA Avios works but costs more miles (34,000 vs. 30,000 AAdvantage). If you must use UR, transfer to BA only when AAdvantage has no saver availability.
For LATAM nonstop: Amex MR to Delta SkyMiles is the most accessible path from US currencies. Expect 35,000-55,000 Delta miles for economy one-way on LATAM.
For Copa one-stop via PTY: Capital One or Citi TYP to Avianca LifeMiles at 25,000-30,000 miles is the best value. Chase UR to United at 30,000 miles is simpler but costs a bit more.
For Avianca one-stop via BOG: Same programs and pricing as Copa.
Premium Cabin Strategy
If you're booking business class with points, the calculus shifts:
- Best product nonstop: LATAM 787-9 or AA Flagship Suite on refurbished 777-200ER. Both fully flat with direct aisle access.
- Best value nonstop: 57,500 AAdvantage miles for AA Flagship Business. Hard to beat. LATAM Pass at 60,000 miles off-peak is competitive.
- Best value one-stop: LifeMiles at 50,000-60,000 miles for Avianca 787 business via BOG. The BOG-GRU leg on the 787 is lie-flat, and total cost undercuts any nonstop business class award.
- I'd skip this for business class: Copa via PTY. 737 recliner seats on both legs. For an overnight trip, that's a hard sell despite the low cash fare.
Cash Fare Strategy
| Season | Economy RT (Nonstop) | Economy RT (One-Stop) | Business RT (Nonstop) | Business RT (One-Stop) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak (Dec-Jan, Carnival, Jun-Jul) | $800-1,200 | $650-900 | $4,000-6,000 | $2,500-4,000 |
| Shoulder (Mar-May, Aug-Nov) | $500-750 | $380-600 | $2,800-4,000 | $1,800-2,800 |
| Sale fares (error/promo) | $350-450 | $280-400 | $1,500-2,500 | $1,200-1,800 |
Book economy 2-3 months ahead for the best pricing. Business class deals surface 1-4 months out, especially on Copa and Avianca where they run flash sales to fill premium cabins.
Set fare alerts on Google Flights for MIA-GRU and MIA-PTY-GRU. Copa sale fares to Brazil appear periodically and can dip below $400 round trip in economy.
Practical Notes
Immigration at GRU: US citizens enter Brazil visa-free for stays up to 90 days (within a 180-day period). Immigration at GRU can take 20-60 minutes depending on when you land. Early morning arrivals (when nonstops land) tend to be slower -- multiple long-haul flights arrive at once.
Ground transport from GRU: The airport is 25 km northeast of central Sao Paulo. Express bus services (Airport Bus Service) run to major hotels and neighborhoods. Ride-share (99, Uber) costs R$80-120 to central SP. The CPTM train connects to the city rail network but it's slow.
Currency: Brazil uses the Brazilian Real (BRL). The exchange rate fluctuates a lot (R$4.80-5.50 per USD in recent years). Credit cards with no foreign transaction fees are a must. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted; Amex less so outside high-end hotels and restaurants.
Connecting to domestic Brazil flights: If you're continuing beyond Sao Paulo, LATAM, GOL, and Azul all have big domestic networks from GRU. Book your domestic leg separately if self-connecting, or on the same ticket as your international flight for bag transfer and rebooking protection. GRU has three terminals -- confirm your domestic carrier's terminal before connecting.
